The Secret Cell Phone Companies Don't Want You to Know: GPS Tracking Might Not Always Be Available!

Municipalities around the globe started to realize that GPS solutions using cellular services may not be available in disaster situations and that tracking based on licensed radio frequencies makes for a more reliable and cost effective way to monitor city vehicles and personnel. Unlike cellular solutions radio-based GPS transmission also do not burden users with monthly bandwidth costs and cities can often utilize existing infrastructure and licenses. We created a simple calculator for you to see how many vehicles you can track and how fast. And we collected the learnings from these 'cell to RF conversions' in a free white paper which can be downloaded for here.

Raveon's Leaky Feeder - Radio for Underground

Since our visit to the Mine Expo in Las Vegas last year, Raveon's M7 series is gaining more and more popularity in leaky feeder systems for underground data communication. When used as part of a leaky-feeder system one end of the M7 radio is wired as receiver (RX) while the other site is wired for transmission (TX) of data.

This solution overcomes the typical line-of-sight limitations inherent to all radio-based solution by using a coaxial cable to connect the radios while leaving gaps ("leaks") in the coaxial's insulation - hence the cable works like an extended antenna. Read more.
